How often is it a new comic series can simply make the month long wait for the next issue utterly unbearable? Based on the third issue of the Last Born series, which has upped the ante, I honestly don’t know how I’ll get through to New Year without reading the next one.

The series continues to take the established sci-fi concepts of the apocalypse and time travel and creates a series unlike any other. The characters remain the most exceptional aspect, particularly as they are all from different times in history and the interactions demonstrate this, especially Stone Age girl Eden, whose savage characteristic adheres to her upbringing but clashes with the more stable Julia. While the issue explored Eden’s backstory, in the process we also learnt more of the series antagonist, the Viral Man.

It is clear that Patrick Meaney had a specific vision for the series and this is shown through the clever structure. The artwork is once again spot on, particularly the physical appearance of the characters. Though the appearance of the Viral Man is perhaps a clichéd look of a sci-fi antagonist, it is nevertheless correct in highlighting his menacing characterisation. While the series is beyond bizarre even by sci-fi standards, it never loses focus and is simply the style of this particular series which makes it all the more enjoyable.

Hopefully, for the next issue at least, there will be no more character introductions or backstory’s and that we go forward with whatever happens next. What excites me most is that I have no clue as to where the series will go next.

Black Mask must be pleased with this series, it’s clever and intense and continues to deliver some of the most humane characters I’ve come across in any science fiction story in a while. Now I want the New Year to hurry up so I can read issue 4!

10/10
